IoT infrastructure expands across North Yorkshire

NYnet and Connexin partner to enhance capability, reach most customers and bring increased benefits to residents and communities.

Established in 2007, NYnet – which is wholly owned by North Yorkshire Council – now provides fast, reliable broadband and connectivity to homes, businesses and public sector services across the region. The company has now signed a LoRaWAN network sharing and operations agreement with smart tech and digital provide Connexin to quickly and widely expand IoT network infrastructure.

Long range wide area networks (LoRaWANs) enable all types of digital tech in battery operated devices (or ‘things’) such as sensors, meters and appliances to connect to the internet via regional, national or even global networks. These kinds of connected devices make up the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT), offering a range of benefits. NYnet can already use its existing network to cover aspects of council operations including social care, public health, parking, bin collections and air quality monitoring in schools. The LoRaWAN currently covers some 85% of the North Yorkshire region.

The revenue share model agreed between NYnet and Connexin means each organisation can roam openly on to the other’s network service at no cost. The first phase of expansion will also see a further 57 gateways added by the end of this month.

Among the benefits of this rapid expansion is the way it will support rollout of Yorkshire Water’s advanced meter infrastructure (AMI).

Alastair Taylor, Chief Executive Officer at NYnet, says: ‘Connexin is rapidly establishing itself as the de facto national LoRaWAN provider and we are extremely pleased to be partnering across North Yorkshire to assist them in increasing coverage across our region. We look forward to working closely together on this project and offering businesses, citizens and organisations in North Yorkshire with opportunities to benefit from our far-reaching network offering.’

Ralph Varcoe, Chief Growth Officer at Connexin, adds: ‘Our new partnership with NYnet is something we are incredibly excited about. Not only will this ensure more Yorkshire Water customers receive the services they need, but we can also continue to gain coverage for other customers across the region by roaming with NYnet. This true innovative partnership approach will help to further digitise the region.’
